A Journey of Symphony

A Journey of Symphony

An Indonesian born and raised in Germany, Iskandar Widjaja is known for his mastery and accolades in classical music. He has made his way as one of the most renowned violinists of his generation. Alchemist followed his journey to London to acquire one of the world’s most esteemed violins for his grand performance in Italy.

Established in 1727 by Antonio Stradivari, the ‘Vesuvius’ violin embodies the Italian master luthier’s unparalleled skill. The Stradivarius name is no stranger to musicians, as it is the most famous string instrument maker. This museum-worthy instrument does not produce new products, as there are only 600 left available to be used. Because of its high price point, only truly chosen musicians are allowed to borrow or have one. The violin acquired by Iskandar from Florian’s shop was created in 1690, making it an extraordinarily special piece of musical history—an instrument that any string musician would travel far and wide for.

Iskandar’s journey to acquire this violin was filled with anticipation and excitement. Florian's shop in London, known for its exquisite collection of rare instruments, was the perfect place for Iskandar to find the ideal violin for his performance. Florian, a renowned luthier and collector, has a reputation for his meticulous care and expertise in maintaining these historical instruments. The acquisition of the 1690 Stradivarius was a momentous occasion, not just for Iskandar but for the entire classical music community.

Iskandar’s grand performance is held at the Violin Museum in Cremona, Italy—a fitting location given the city's rich history in violin making. Cremona is the birthplace of Antonio Stradivari, and the museum houses some of the most treasured violins in the world. As he already acquired the Stradivari violin, it would only be fitting for him to have the performance titled ‘Stradivarius: Between Ancient and Modern’. The small concert is designed to take the audience on a musical journey through different eras and styles, showcasing the versatility and timeless beauty of the Stradivarius violin.

Performing as an ensemble, Iskandar is accompanied by Friedrich Wengler on fortepiano and Paul Kleber on cello. Their collaboration brings a unique blend of historical authenticity and modern interpretation to the performance. The choice of repertoire spans from Baroque masterpieces to contemporary compositions, highlighting the enduring legacy of Stradivari's craftsmanship and its influence on music across centuries.

Iskandar's journey to London and his performance in Cremona are testaments to his dedication to his craft and his desire to honor the legacy of the Stradivarius violin. His ability to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation has made him a celebrated figure in the classical music world. The concert at the Violin Museum not only highlights his exceptional talent but also pays tribute to the enduring allure of one of the greatest violins ever made.
